The title is a nautical term that means to hold a vessel against and at an angle to the current/stream such that the vessel moves sideways over the bottom due to the effect of the current operating on the upstream side of the vessel.
I have always viewed the prairie as a kind of ocean. I remember stories as a boy about wagons that were modified with sails to travel across the prairie under wind power alone. Probably not very realistic, but as a boy it created wonderful adventures that have stuck with me.
In my mind, the copse of trees is that vessel on an ocean of green.
This time of year is very colourful on the prairie. It follows the white of winter, and the brown of spring. These colours will not last long, especially in the fields as they ripen to gold. Then once again we will have a brown fall and a white winter, where we will wait for another explosion of green.
