While sometimes it is necessary to adjust the light on scenes of this nature, in this specific circumstance, patience and timing paid off.

I had been watching this scene for a while as I was taking other images. But the lighting was all wrong. Then as I watched, a small break formed in the clouds and the sun dappled my scene. The problems I had been having with exposure latitude disappeared with the arrival of the sun beams, the the exposure worked.

That kind of lighting is a photographer's dream if he's in the right spot at the right time!
