Why HDR is sharper...

original comment

It is amazing to me that the composite HDR actually has greater clarity and sharpness than the normally exposed version. If any one has any ideas about why this might be so, please comment.

August 24, 2009 addition.

As I suspected in my replies to comments, Photoshop is using a number of sharpening techniques in the background when it forms the HDR image. As a result, the HDR appears sharper than the normally exposed image.

Experimentation seems to indicate that similar results can be achieved if LAB Colour sharpening is used. I also tried a number of edge sharpening techniques which seem to have helped. In the final result, the non HDR image actually preserved more detail on the roof of the elevator than the HDR did. This is an interesting observation to me.

Overall the HDR image is still sharper, but I suspect that this is because the program is better able to analyze what is required, and my attempt was simply to try to understand what possible steps it used in forming the HDR. I also suspect that given time, a human operator could create an image just as sharp as the HDR and perhaps could improve on it, as evidenced by my ability to hold greater detail in the roof.

thanks for your comments and :+fav:'s
