Against the Grain

Description

There are a few things that I like about this image, I like the pun in the title, it was not intended when I named it, and I only later discovered its presence... just a bit slow. But the exposure of the grain stocks in this way was created by cutting against the grain.

I also like that the rules have been broken on this one in a number of key areas specifically related to centering, yet it still works.

There are elements of hard and soft realities represented in this image.

The hard reality is represented by the ground and the wheat. The soft reality is represented by the clouds and sky.

The heart shape created in the sky, corresponds to the rough diamond shape created by the grain. Both of these elements, hard and soft are necessary for life. Diamonds and hearts have always been associated with love and affection. Diamonds are a hard reality of the earth, while hearts are a soft reality of emotion. There is in our lives a love relationship not only between persons, but also between the earth and man. The earth is not just the element that holds us up, but through its production it stains us and gives us life The same can be said of relationships of the heart. They strengthen us, they hold us up especially in the difficult times and they give us life. Even though they cannot be observed like the diamond, the grain or the earth they are as real. Both of these elements are represented and demonstrated within this image.

The first thing I have to say is that I am thoroughly impressed by this image. The contrast between the harsh linear quality of the grain and the soft, more abstract quality of the sky is striking and highly effective. The exposure is great, as well as the color...a lot of artists on this site would probably have chosen to blast out the contrast, make the sky unnaturally bright, or to ominously darken the sky, but the natural balances you achieved here are fantastic. It's striking in and of itself, which (in my opinion) is the way it SHOULD be. Some may comment negatively on the half-and-half composition choice...while I will admit that my first reaction was skeptical, I think it was an effective choice, and you made it work well for you...all the more evidence to your skill! All in all, fantastic work--thanks for sharing! <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt="=)" title="=) (Smile)" />
