A PLACE CALLED HOME (2487) by WayneBenedet A PLACE CALLED HOME (2487) by WayneBenedet
I came across this place today on my travels.  It is located some distance from the road, but I decided to use a telephoto rather than go closer.   It was not raining at the time of the exposure, but it started soon after.

Sometimes a place just says home.... no matter how old or run down it gets.

looks like a good example of HDR ( whether it is or not - I don't know ) - but the results are pleasing to the eye - though the definition in the clouds pulls them somewhat forward of the foreground to my eye .

It is not an HDR, but I agree it does have elements.  The shadows and highlights have been adjusted in processing, which is a regular step for me.  The only difference for this image (As compared to others I have posted) is that I layered the final result to intensify the clouds just a bit more.

I had a feeling it wasn't HDR - but it gives a similar effect . I think - it is because this viewer is not used to seeing the sky that defined - that it seems to come forward as compared to a more traditional looking sky . This processing leaves me on the middle of the fence in my reaction - elements that I like - but others I'm still unsure of - still - I love threatening cloudscapes juxtaposed with a sunny landscape --- it's just that the sky becomes the focus point . Still - great work as usual - just giving some feedback .

I appreciate the feed back and discussion.

I think your assessment has merit.  It was a different process for me, the emotion affected what I saw and wanted in the final results.  Usually I don't make these kinds of extreme adjustments, but it called to me in this situation, so I pushed for it.  The highlights and shadows filter can create HDR like effects if pushed too far.  I really do not like HDR as a personal preference, so I try to skirt that edge.  In this case though, I went far over a line that I usually avoid.

Personally I like the result, because it captured the emotion of the scene as I saw it.  (But yes, the clouds are heavy.... but they could be dialed back with the opacity slider)

yup... its a learning process, if we don't experiment we don't learn, but we also learn from others perceptions, so I appreciate your perspective.

It was actually a nice day, but I did have to drive back in the rain, over a few roads that I would rather have avoided in wet weather.  But I didn't get stuck and only had to turn back once to get around a bad area.
